Geoffrey Lipman · Handwritten record

Before the framework, there was a conversation.

At the time of Zhu’s 2012 book launch, a discussion about travel and airline economics gave the project its name. Lipman wrote “Ask Zhu” on the book.

The inscription connects the publishing years to a new question: how could the economics of travel be understood from the airline’s side?

Broadcast history

A travel idea entered the national conversation.

A travel experiment became a subject for television conversation.

Zhu’s guest appearances spanned national public-interest discussion, personal storytelling, Chinese-language conversation and regional entertainment. Together, they show how his travel experience reached audiences beyond books and newspaper pages.

CCTV · 18 May 2004

实话实说

Tell It Like It Is

01

A national forum for everyday experience

Launched in 1996 by CCTV’s news commentary department, the programme brought guests and studio audiences into direct discussion of social life and personal experience. CCTV’s July 2004 account reported that the programme ranked first across the broadcaster for audience satisfaction in 2003. Zhu appeared on 18 May 2004 in the episode “能走多远就走多远” (How Far Can You Go?). Host: He Jing / 和晶.

This entertainment talk show used an informal, locally rooted style to reach a broad audience. Presenters: Wang Han / 汪涵 and Ma Ke / 马可.

Why these appearances belong in the record

These were established editorial settings, each with its own audience and way of discussing public life. Being invited to speak placed Zhu’s ideas about travel, information and access into that wider conversation.

Appearance identities follow the founder’s archive and account. The contemporary report linked above documents the CCTV appearance; broadcaster sources describe programme background. The external YouTube item is a separately hosted archival copy. Appearance dates are omitted where the available record is not sufficiently precise.

Books · Public record · 2003–2012

Published Works.

Before ASKZHU.AI, Zhaorui Zhu became publicly known through a series of books on independent travel, airfare accessibility and practical international mobility. Published across several years and editions, these works form part of the documented public record behind his long-running interest in how people gain access to air travel and how fragmented travel resources can be used more intelligently.

These publications document the founder’s earlier public work in travel economics and related fields. English titles are descriptive translations.

Around the World on US$3,000

《3000美金,我周游了世界》

FOUNDATIONAL TITLE · 2003

Zhu Zhaorui’s breakthrough travel book documented an approximately US$3,000 round-the-world journey and introduced a broad Chinese readership to a different way of thinking about international travel: not as an expensive luxury, but as a problem of information, routing, timing and resource allocation.

The book became the foundation of Zhu’s early public profile and led to extensive media coverage, lectures and subsequent publications on economical international travel.

SIXTH BOOK · 2012

Published nearly a decade after Zhu’s first major travel book, Departure Is the Only Way to Arrive revisited the larger idea behind his travel writing: that mobility begins with action, but becomes possible through information, planning and a willingness to challenge conventional assumptions about cost and access.

The 2012 publication also marked an important moment in the later ASKZHU.AI story. At the Beijing launch, Geoffrey Lipman wrote “Ask Zhu” on the book’s flyleaf, creating the name that would later be used for ASKZHU.AI.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TITLE · 2005

A practical companion to Zhu’s early travel writing, this title focused on one of the most difficult barriers facing independent international travelers at the time: obtaining visas across multiple jurisdictions.

The book translated personal experience into practical information about cross-border mobility, documentation and trip preparation.

REGIONAL LOW-FARE TRAVEL · 2008

A regional travel guide built around the economics of low-cost air travel in Southeast Asia, showing how route structure, fare timing and local transportation could change the practical cost of international travel.

The title extended Zhu’s earlier round-the-world work into a more focused examination of low-fare regional mobility.

REGIONAL LOW-FARE TRAVEL · 2008

A companion regional title examining independent travel across Central and Eastern Europe through the lens of airfare, routing, ground transportation and destination cost.

Together with the Southeast Asia volume, it reflected Zhu’s continuing effort to turn international travel economics into practical, repeatable travel decisions.

TAIWAN EDITION · 2003

A Taiwan edition of Zhu’s early round-the-world travel work, extending the publication beyond its original mainland Chinese readership.

Its inclusion here documents the publishing reach of the original travel narrative.

From Travel Access to Airline Decision Economics

The books addressed the traveler’s side of the aviation system: how information, timing and route choice could make travel more accessible. ASKZHU.AI approaches a related economic problem from the airline side: when scarce inventory should be protected, released or left undecided when the evidence is insufficient.
